Expected Numbers on Doctor Shortages

Contrary to earlier figures, the new projected number of doctor shortages by 2015, one year after all of the health care reform takes place, is approximately 63,000.  Earlier projections had the numbers at around 40,000.

There will be a greater number of increases in the number of Americans age 65 and older, but the rate of students graduating medical school will not increase at the same rate.  This is not the only reason for a shortage of doctors.  Millions of younger Americans who will be obligated to purchase health coverage will not become patients and there are not enough doctors to go around.  For more on this issue, read this Reuters article, Health reform to worsen doctor shortage: group
