Private Employers Giving Incentives for Good health Choices

Private employers are now offering their employees cash incentives if they make healthier lifestyle choices.  Some of those healthier lifestyle choices include: stopping smoking, weight loss, good management of diabetes.  In 2010, 62% of employers offered such cash incentives; this was an increase from 2009 and only 57% of employers.

Some examples of cash incentives include: cash, gift cards and monetary contributions from employers to employees’ health savings accounts.  In some cases, punitive actions were taken where 12% of employers decreased their contributions to employees’ health plans because those employees declined participation in wellness efforts.  What are your thoughts on this issue?  For more information, check out this article, Private employers paying for better health choices, too
